This is a whole 'nother story...and I never said he shouldn't pay his support! I am just saying we could have more if we didn't have to pay it.

Alot depends on how much the insurance is for any given house in any given area.

In my opinion, you shouldn't follow what "most people" do when it comes to buying a house. Like someone said earlier, the housing market is messed up because of people getting under mortgages they cannot afford, and have no business being in. Our way of thinking is pretty messed up if we think it's crazy to put 20% down on a house. You need to seriously look at what % of your net monthly income can go towards you mortgage, which shouldn't be more than 25%. That should determine what you finance the house for. If you can't buy the house you want for 25% or less, then do the unconventional thing - be patient and save.
