What is the reason for such a big gap this year?

They are still competing with playoffs. This weekend is wild card weekend and then it's the divisional rounds.

The reason the game is on a monday and not saturday is because of the NFL playoff though

A team gets a bye week. There are more than one big game. You play Florida one week and the next week you are welcoming Georgia or Auburn or Alabama. Even the weaker teams like aTm or Tennessee will beat most of the teams in the ACC or Big 10 or win 12.

LSU plays Florida, Auburn, Alabama, aTm, ole Piss, MIss State and Arkansas every year and rotate through another East school. It could be Georgia or it could be Vandy or anything in between.

You can’t let your guard down and most, not all but most SEC teams also schedule a big OOC game like Texas or Oregon or Notre Dame.

No other conference plays the top 20 teams week in and week out like SEC teams. LSU played half its games against top 15 completion. Ohio State or Clemson can’t say that. They will try and say it but they can’t.

Other conferences have their teams ranked high artificially because the College officials and Media fear that College Football will become a southern sport or regional sport and they have to artificially peak interest so that the rest of the country doesn’t turn to California with empty stadiums.
Ohio State would lose 2-4 games a year in the SEC west.
