I remember being told that the tear away jerseys were developed at the USDA facility in New Orleans. These jerseys were banned by the NCAA. FWIW this USDA facility developed "permanent press" cotton in the 60's.

the first i ever saw anyone in mesh jerseys was auburn in 1969. i'm sure others were wearing them, but like i said the tigers didn't wear them then, and the first ones i ever saw was when auburn came to tiger stadium.

It's also possible that the jersey on the card was something from Cannon's professional days.
