I think your read of Alleva and Les' relative power is wrong. Les pre-dates Alleva. He has a ton of allies in the media and the AD. Alleva knew the only way to push this through was to make it inevitable. He did that. You might not like it or believe it, but trust me, it was orchestrated like this for a reason.

Unless he has a health issue that would force him into retirement, he's going to force the issue with this contract that Alleva agreed to. I sure has hell would. Les might be quirky and bizarre at times, but being stupid doesn't get you this far in life.
