For those of you that are old enough to watch LSU win a title in 1958 - how many years after the fact did it take to stop using the following statements to define a season while milking the national title that was year by year growing away from memory: "almost", "could have been", "should have been", "if only", "it was just bad luck", "LSU fans are being ridiculous", etc.?

I'm curious. Because call me a negatiger or a chicken little, but after last night I'm starting to get that feeling again of what it was like to be an LSU fan in the 80's. Thank God I went to LSU so I have the whole school loyalty thing to fall back on. ESPECIALLY if Miles keeps Crowton on staff.

It wasn't really that bad. Had some good seasons. Two SEC championships. 3 "BCS" bowls. LSU had some really good teams in the 80s. But as good as LSU was in any particular year, the Tigers were NEVER really in the National Championship discussion. Even in 1982 when we started off 7-0-1.

Stovall had a couple bad years, and Archer screwed the pooch in 1989, but there were some great memories.

I guess I didn't really didn't specify well. I meant to ask what it was like to be an LSU fan in the 60's and 70's. I remember the 80's well. At that time though, 1958 was well on its way of being a thing of the past. I wonder what it was like to see LSU under Coach Charlie Mac in say, 1965. Where 1958 was not that long ago but you could get a feel that we would never quite be at that level again.

Ok, gotcha. That's a good question.

Ask a Georgia fan what the late 80s/90s were like.

Probably similar.

the fact remains you have to stay aggressive to win NC's

I don't see that with LSU right now.

Fans hated "TallPaul" for leaving LSU and later wanted to fire coach Mac & his OC. Fans really never change as history just repeats itself. "TALL PAUL" came back in 1978-82 as AD & Mac was gone in 1979.For history to repeat we need Saban to come back as AD and fire Miles and the circle will be complete. Then the fans can start hating the next coach.

Attended my first game in Tiger Stadium in 1949. Coach Tinsley always second guessed. Some disappointment in hiring Dietzel - why hire an assistant coach, we could have our pick of any successful coach in the country!

Was a senior in high school during the 58 NC season, got to attend a couple of games, including the Ole Miss game. Entered LSU in 1959.

Everybody expected a repeat of 58 every year after that. 1961 should have been the next NC, but an opening game loss to Rice prevented that - might have been Dietzel's best team.

Bitter at how Dietzel left - booed him when he returned to TS as South Carolina coach.

Thought hiring Cholly Mac was good - expected great things in 62; early season tie with Rice very disappointing and some disolution with Mac; late season loss to Ole Miss - believe "Help Mac Pack" got started then. Every fan knew they could coach better than Mac.

Nobody happy with results in mid-60s; so much talent and no titles. Thought some of the late 60s and early 70s teams were NC caliper, finally beat BAMA, but let Ole Miss spoil that 69 season. Mac's only SEC championship in 1970, but even that team suffered 3 losses! Most thought Bo Rein would bring the Tigers the next NC.

Not much different then from now, just no internet to vent on and very little talk radio.

Coach Mac was a giant compared to Dietzel. The 1969 team, alone, was every bit as good as 1958 (thank you Darryl Royal).

Sonnyboy, those words are used every year by every team that does NOT go undefeated. I am quite sure they would be used by stupid jackasses like YOU if LSU would be undefeated. I can hear it now. We "almost" lost that game. We just as easily "could have been" 10-2 etc.
You are a joke and so is anyone who agrees with you
