I loved Saban while he was at LSU. I thought he did a fantastic job of bringing LSU back to relevance. I love Les Miles and think he has maintained and built upon what Saban left and even made it better. As proud as I was of Saban as a football coach I was never proud of him as a human being. I am just as proud of Les Miles as an honorable man as I am of his "damn-strong" coaching abilities. Not saying Saban is evil or anything, I just think Les Miles has demonstrated (many times) his honor and integrity in a way Saban never has. I am proud to call Les Miles "Coach" of LSU for lots of reasons. May he stay a long time.

After the classy and dignified way he handled the aftermath of Katrina. With the unbelievable distractions caused by that catastrophic event, and how it clearly affected the team in 2005, he certainly got my respect both as a coach and a man. To finish 9-1 with everything that happened then, and in particular to a great many of the players families, well, I don't know what else can be said.....
+1 Love da Hat!!!

Without Saban, Les Miles is not that relevant in college football

When he said, "My damn strong football team." Moreover, he is a Michigan Letterman in football and wrestling (which humbles us here in Louisiana wrestling and, in my opinion, as an ex-Louisiana wrestler); so he is one tough hombre. He is highly intelligent; he was an Economics major and has been around elite football for many years.

I didn't like Miles at first, I had to be sold. I was not on board until the Peach Bowl which I attended. I could see and feel the energy of the players up in the stands. I knew the coach had prepared them well and got them motivated for the game. We could easily have been blown out by Miami after losing to GA in the SECCG and losing JR, but we instead pasted the thuglings from South Florida, and then beat their asses in the tunnel. I knew we had a coach and a team at that point.

anyone still not sold on Miles???
I don't, nor will I ever think Miles is a great coach. Good....yeah, I think he's good with the totality of what he brings to the table.
But I'm not one of the "fear the hat/trust the hat" crew that that's unconditionally loyal and defensive of his image. Nor am I one who thinks, as some do, that Miles' persona is a Columbo-like ruse to throw of his evil rivals. I think he is what we see.
But I am sold on him as a person, at least relative to his peers in a very seedy profession.
In that context I think he's a good guy and I want very badly for him to do well cause I like him. I hope he's here a long time.
So if that's being sold on him than I am and have been for awhile.

When did you get on the Miles bandwagon and respect his talent as a HC?
When he promoted Mallory and Paveto to Co-DCs.

Tiger Ugly, your summation on Coach Miles closest resembles mine of those listed in this thread.
I gave him and the staff hell here on TD, just like many others here last Fall. But only such as to have our voices heard over the Co-Disaster, which thankfully was quickly jettisoned.
I do however disagree on your assertion that Coach Miles cannot nor will ever be a great HC. As he once at LSU, has great regular season marks, bowl mark, and recruiting successes that have him at or near the top of the national heap.
And has himself in position to be as good as any program over the next decade. It's there for the taking. And with Meyer and Saban in his way, the results to come in future years will clearly distinguish and/or prove/disprove his rank-and-file in these regards.
I gave Coach Miles flack in Speedy's 'Miles W/L Tally' thread, took flack from Rtgr and others, but must say in defense of HC-LM, that to have him any lower than the Top 6 or 7 in current Top HC polls(of which he is usually much lower in the many ones I see) is totally ignorant by such writers and/or pollsters, as his LSU era clearly has placed him properly in this top company of HCs.
And Coach, his wife, and family are even better people at the game of life, at each and every pathcrossing you'll ever incur them.

I hope you turn out to be right and I turn out to be wrong in that regard Roar. I have an ego like everyone else and I love to be right, but LSU winning always trumps my need to be right.

Awwww, c'mon Tiger fans! You know you all will be screaming at the TV this fall when Washington is still hanging around late in the 4th qtr instead of being blown out by Les and the gang. Les, as usual, will be coaching not-to-lose instead of coaching to win. Then, at the last minute he'll "open it up" and let his play makers do their thing. Folks will be jumping off the Miles bandwagon like lemmings!
And for weeks afterwards, y'all be right back to how this guy cannot coach an elite program like LSU....

I don't understand how people can get so pissed off when people say they don't believe in Les yet. Let's think about this:
Why - He led the team to a great year through Katrina
Why - He led the 2006 team to a Sugar Bowl
Why - He won a national championship
Why - He had great 07 and 09 classes
Why - He hired a, what looks to be, great coaching staff
Why not - LSU's most talented team ever lost 2 games
Why not - LSU lost TWICE as the #1 team in the country in 07.
Why not - LSU lost on Senior Day against a mediocre team with EVERYTHING on the line
Why not - He hired his friends instead of going outside the program
Why not - He went 8-5
It's just not a slamdunk for me. If he could win 10 games next year with our schedule, I'll be onboard.

We are a sound bite, in the moment sports society. Our last impression is of a good bowl win so now the concensus is Les screwed up a couple of things but corrected them and last year was an abberation and the vast majority of us are still in his corner.
But you can bet the first bad performance next year and we'll come out of the woodwork with the Coker comparisons.
Nature of the beast...right or wrong.

TN game in 2006. He put his faith in the one guy who almost lost the game for us but then won it (JR). Showed sound judgement. LM hasn't looked back since.
