UTK is very ugly. Sidewalks are not maintained and the commerce near the university is poor. The Fort Sanders area just north of the main campus has an ongoing homeless problem (improving though).

The housing in that area is slowly being upgraded, but most of the houses were quickly build in the 1982 World's Fair with little thought of the future of the housing buildings (and therefore poor workmanship).

Nearly half of the students require finical aid with an in-state tuition of less than 10k, which is very cheap for a tuition. so that could by why everything is run-down and cheap in the fort area.

The crime rate...For a city its size...Knox has a really high crime rate...41st most dangerous city in 2009,If you go by the rankings anyways...Thats worse than Miami,Jacksonville,Nashville,Charlotte,Los Angeles,Vegas,Etc

If you want to have fun, Baton Rouge >>>> Knoxville. If you want a job, Baton Rouge >>>> Knoxville. If you want a pretty campus, LSU >>>> Tennessee.

Put that in your corncob pipe and smoke it.

41st most dangerous city in 2009,

The article I just linked had BR as the 7th most dangerous city per capita.

Not sure what your point is about Knoxville being 41st.

If I want to go to some guido or rap star club I'm sure BR has a lot to do.

Knoxville has more than enough night life.

Which is why there's a Fulmer Cup, and it's named after a former Tennessee coach...

If there was enough to do, there wouldn't be so many UT players getting in as much trouble as they do.

The key words there are "per capita".

Baton Rouge's crime is mostly centered in the North part of the city, in an historically black area. LSU is the south part of the city.

Live in Richmond and have been to Blacksburg many times for games(including our ill fated trip when Saban was at LSU.Green's punt called back and letting kevin jones reverse field and run for a mile really screwed my day).VT's problem is exactly as most have posted. It's in the middle of nowhere.Very hard to get "big time" recruits to go there. They do have a great gameday atmosphere and it's loud in that place. Also lots of parties but that's the case at most universities. The fact that they don't usually get major recruits should be an indicator as to how good their coaching staff really is.Top 5 staff in the country as far as coaching talent up and getting the most from the kids they have. They have a great track record of finding guys that are a little under the radar or a little undersized but fit their system very well.Great talent evaluators on that staff. One huge reason that Tech fans(I despise most of them)should fell blessed every year that Beamer stays there. When he's gone back to mediocrity they go.

I've never argued that Knoxville is the best place in America.

Just that Baton Rouge is crime/poverty ridden shithole, which it is.

So Miami is not in the top 41? something about your list is wrong. Miami has less crime than Knoxville TN?

And nashville was 7 on forbes most violent cities last year. So it definitely isn't worse than Nashville.

Get over it man BR is a piece of shite. no need to defend it. Been there plenty of times, nothing you can type will change what I've seen.

Oh and Boone is still >>>>>>>>>>>>> Baton Rouge

No kidding. Clemson is more comparable to Auburn. VT is a place where a good recruiter could recruit. Beamer recruits his kind of players and it may not necessarily be blue chip prospects. It's more the staff and not the location

Good call.

Bad call. Again, Baton Rouge tied Seattle for number one in job growth. It's an exciting time in the city, with a lot of construction going on and new projects planned every day.

And Baton Rouge has a unique culture and way of life, and the best cooking anywhere.

Places like Knoxville are just another cookie cutter southern-fried town where the accents vary only by degree, and the food and beliefs vary little from state to state.

I guess there's a reason why you take up for Boone...hicks stick together.

Job Growth. Job Growth does not equal economy. It's easy to grow if you're already in the gutter.

Quite frankly it's hilarious that you think Seattle's economy is worse than Baton Rouge, LA's.

The two cities do not compare(look at things like poverty level, median and average incomes, crime rates) but by the way you're arguing about BR. I'd be willing to bet you haven't been north of Jackson Mississippi.

25 Baton Rouge, LA.

So Knoxville is roughly the same size as BR but we are ranked 16 spots behind them. I'll take that.

You're being picky now. Bottom line is, Baton Rouge is better than Knoxville. More to do, better food to eat, and close to New Orleans.

LSU is better than Tennessee. Better campus, better area around the campus, better football team.

We win.
