in our south florida recruiting (Dwayne Bowe, PP) are making me laugh now...how did we ever pull those guys with this booster doing what they were doing down there? mad props to saban/miles and there staff for overcoming those obstacles.

Not every recruit finds playing in the ACC in front of 50k fulfilling.

Not only did he turn out to be a great receiver, but he also brought Ali Highsmith with him, who was a Miami commit initially but didn't qualify academically and went the JUCO route.

cloase enough....he was a partial qualifier at LSU but couldn't get into miami

LOL, where do y'all come up with this stuff? Ali played his true freshman year. Can't do that if you're a partial qualifier.

The de facto rule is way simpler than you all are making it: If you are a scholarship football player, and you pass the NCAA clearinghouse, Miami will accept you academically, and so will LSU. Point, period, end of discussion. Discipline issues are treated differently on a case-by-case basis.

Ali came to LSU over Miami because that's what he wanted to do in the end, because Saban and his staff did a hell of a job recruiting him. Had nothing to do with academics.

Gravitiger,
I hate to say this but you appear not to follow recruiting:

Miami (FL) COMMITTED (07/08/2003) Offered

A few weeks ago, Miami admissions denied LB Ali Highsmith entrance despite a qualifying score and grades. Now Highsmith is headed to LSU.

Form the Miami Rivals article Jan 4 2004:

He was told when he was denied admission in August that if he improved his SAT score, which he did with what he says was a 1090, that he would be able to practice with the team in December.

Instead he says he was told by UM officials in December that he needed to take three classes at another school – Miami-Dade or Broward Community College were mentioned as good possibilities – and that if he got a 2.5 grade-point average in those classes that he would be accepted at UM.

Highsmith signed with Miami out of high school, then LSU only after his grades and score were questioned.

This. I remember it being kind of a surprise that we got him when school started.

No, I did not follow recruiting very closely back then. I was a single college student with far more important things on my mind that I actually could control (or thought so, anyway).

Man enough to admit I was wrong about the Ali-Miami admission thing, but I doubt that would happen anymore. They would let him in if the NCAA would. Highsmith's scores and grades were better than Seantrel's were last year.

Still though, Highsmith was not a "partial qualifier" at LSU as that term is defined by the NCAA, which was the main point of my post. I took myself off topic (and incorrectly to boot) with my edit.
