If We get Toles and Burns would we need another safety? And should we of gone after Reed harder being 6-1 190 vs Greene 5-10 180? I don’t know what we look for in safeties, if Greene had that ballhawking trait few have. I’ll hang up and listen.

I’m hypothesizing that we assumed we could get Greene as a ‘freebie’ on academic scholly.

Beside Burns being a CB, we're relatively thin on safety.
We couldn't rotate safeties much this year and it probably gets even worse as players leave for NFL.

Yes you certainly can. It’s been explained by our resident NCAA rules guru, Indiana Tiger.

quote:

He can be on academic scholarship. If he was a recruited athlete you don't have to count him until he plays in a game. So if he doesn't play at all his first year, he wouldn't count against the 25 initial counter limit (this is different from the 25 signee limit which he wouldn't ever count against. Confusing, I know, and it's almost a distinction without merit). In addition, after a year and he maintains a 3.0+ gpa, you wouldn't have to count him against the 85 either when he plays.

You don’t see it OFTEN because the academic requirements are rigid and they have to sit out the first year.

You don’t have to believe it. But it still doesn’t change the fact that it’s allowed.

From USA Today article dated Feb 21, 2019:
quote:

To accept an academic scholarship as an incoming freshman, student-athletes need to meet the following criteria:

Division I:
-Top 10 percent of high school graduating class
-3.5 cumulative GPA out of 4.0
-1200 SAT score/105 ACT sum score

quote:

By imposing these requirements, the NCAA is preventing schools from using academic scholarships as a loophole to get athletes to compete at their school These requirements ensure athletes who combine athletic and academic aid truly deserve it. For this reason, athletes with impressive academics are especially valuable to coaches. If a coach is evaluating you and a comparable athlete to fill a positional need, good grades and test scores can give you an edge.

And if you continue to be obtuse, I’m certain Indiana Tiger can tell you the actual NCAA bylaw that allows this practice.

Actually just because you pissed me off, I found it with a simple Google search myself.

NCAA Bylaw 15.5.3.2.4.3
NCAA Bylaws

In summary, they have to sit out an academic year and maintain a 3.0 GPA, and they won’t be included in the calculation of the 25 initial signees.
