Really depends on the house, location, equipment and cost. I've financed over 100k systems that have guaranteed first year savings with production guarantees. It's part of the system underwriting for most third party owned (lease or PPA) systems.

Make sure you use good equipment. I know there's a ton of DIY stuff out there, but you can't beat the warranties and performance for good tier 1 modules and inverters. Also need to see if you would benefit from module level power electronics or if string level would work for you. They both have advantages and disadvantages and it just depends on the application.

Depending n your setup, you might be able to add a second battery thats cheaper than the first to get enough juice to run it. The PowerWall2, for example, can do it but needs two batteries.
