I don't view a Solar system as a money saver or even a break even point.

Really depends on the house, location, equipment and cost. I've financed over 100k systems that have guaranteed first year savings with production guarantees. It's part of the system underwriting for most third party owned (lease or PPA) systems.

I'm probably going to build my own soon

Make sure you use good equipment. I know there's a ton of DIY stuff out there, but you can't beat the warranties and performance for good tier 1 modules and inverters. Also need to see if you would benefit from module level power electronics or if string level would work for you. They both have advantages and disadvantages and it just depends on the application.

But I also plan on having a backup backup actual generator as well just in case.
There are only a few systems on the market that integrate with generator control, so make sure you look for that.

I’ve been happy with my system

What's your setup?

5 years and no efficiency loss so far.

PV system should be in the 97ish% range still. BESS depends on how hard you're working it but thats typically about 1/3rd way through it's service life.

Depending n your setup, you might be able to add a second battery thats cheaper than the first to get enough juice to run it. The PowerWall2, for example, can do it but needs two batteries.
