go rent a large hammer drill at Home Depot. They even have an attachment made specifically for this. Works in minutes !

This brings back memories. Worked for a electrical subcontractor the summer before my senior year. Dug many holes with a 6' post hole digger and put many ground rods in to run service to homes. Digging a 8' hole was a mfer in some spots around here. Ground rod, not so much. Use the water, it works.
