When my system with 6" pipes was installed, they cut the sidewalk and put the pop-up right at the low curb. Washing out an under-walk tunnel big enough for that pipe would probably not be easy. Once a year I clean away all grass trying to grow over the pop-up. I also take the top of the valve off during a heavy rain about once a summer. That flushes out the small amount of debris that has accumulated.

Most of my neighbors have the pop-up at the walk. That often causes a very slick algae streak to form on the walk.
