So is there a way to see a thread and go directly to the newest post (since you were last on) in that thread? And is there an easier way to keep track of threads you are involved in? Is it just a setting I am missing or something? Thanks.

In the Last Post column for the applicable thread, click on the entry contained in that field.
As for your second question, I think you can do it with the "Subscribe" function.
