The Gamecube may actually be my favorite. Big variety of family friendly games and you should be able to get one relatively cheap online.

OP, for a five year old I would get him a Nintendo 2DS. They are the most durable and child accessible handhelds. They play all the new 3ds games without the 3D functionality. We got one for my nephew who is 4 and he loves it. He can drop it on the ground without worrying about it breaking and actually does pretty well at the games.

Update.
I ended up getting him the wii u, mario kart addition. The thing that finally sold me was the ability to buy old NES games in the nintendo shop.
