Should I play one of the previous Elder Scrolls games before playing Skyrim?

I've never played any of these games before, but Skyrim looks appealing. Should I play the previous games, or are they independent like the Final Fantasy series?

No. The stories are independent of each other

I never played the first ones and picked up Skyrim. I think if you just read up on the first ones you should be fine

You missed out on some great games, but they are not necessary. After playing Skyrim you will probably want to, though.

Although they are great games, if you actually took the time to go back and play Morrowind and Oblivion, you'd probably be burned out by the time you got around to Skyrim.

got time to play a pair of 100+ hour games and THEN pick of skyrim?
if yes, doooooooooo it
if no, just grab skyrim broski
if you are going to play the pc version... wait a couple weeks until they patch it

Yeah. If you played Morrowind you would probably lose interest real quick because the graphics are dated. Oblivion, too, but either way you'd be starting Skyrim about a year from now. If Skyrim makes you want to check them out, do it, but Skyrim stands alone nicely and I've played them all.

In general all I've heard is praise for this game but would yall say it's even better than dragon age?

It's much, much deeper than Dragon Age. Hell, Morrowind is deeper than Dragon Age. You could probably finish the main quest in as much time as it would take to finish DA, but you'd still have dozens of hours of FUN quests to finish.
