Playstation 4 Controller Help

Gaming board, wife got son a new controller for the PS4 today. He lost the original PS4 cable. He charges it fine with a Samsung USB cable. The controller however wont connect to the Playstation either with USB plugged in, and without. The controller blinks white when not plugged in and then fades to Orange, if plugged in. Is this because I don't have a PS4 cable, or is the controller just busted? I have turned off the system and hit the reset button on the back of the controller and still no dice. Pls Gaming Board guru's help me with this issue please and thank you!!

Try powering up the PS4 with another controller. Then connect the one you’re having a problem with and pressing the PS button.
