Get the game. It's NOTHING like Call of Duty or Battlefield. Think of it as a mix between Destiny and Borderlands. You start off at level 1 with level 1 gear. Kills get you XP. Even if you are in a party with people and they get the kill, you still get the same amount of XP as if you had killed him. You will have to level up your gear as well as your weapons. You can't travel into a level 10 mission with level 3 gear and expect to wreck shite.
