I get heartburn sometimes when I drink whiskey. If the first drink gives me heartburn or if I feel it coming on, I switch to gin or vodka...or beer. I have not gotten heartburn with gin, vodka, or beer.
I sometimes eat late right before bed, but can't recall getting heartburn from it.

It's not the drinking. It's the eating late at night.

No, it's both. Probably in addition to his normal southern/Louisiana diet.

If the EGD confirmed GERD and nothing else, then it's worth it to try a few PPI meds until you find one that works for you. There are ALOT of options available right now. I've tried most all of them, and only one works for me. Same with most patients. You just have to find the PPI that works for you, in conjunction with a tweaked diet for best results.

But the alcohol is definitly a factor. And left unchecked, that stomach acid will eventually become more painful and erode your esophagus.

Drink and eat less, keep a food diary and eliminate the foods that cause trouble. I used to have it, I lost 20 pounds, and quit eating like a pig and mine went completely away.

I can basically eat anything I want now, I just quit overeating. The only time I get in any trouble is at a party where I graze all night.

It may help, it may not, I have a couple friends that are the right weight, eat well, and if they have any alcohol or tobacco they are miserable.

Do you use tobacco?
