Question for the gurus: Software to make gifs

So I'm dusting off my farking skills after years and am going to contribute here. I only have GIMP atm (which I used for the first time today) I am a long-time photoshop user.. The transition to GIMP until I can buy a version of photoshop was pretty seamless.
I want to start trying my hand in the gif arena as well. What is a pretty intuitive program to add things into frames of gifs and pretty much make them from scratch as well?
Thanks guys. Go easy on me until I get the swing of GIMP. It's not a huge learning curve coming from photoshop but the thing I miss most I haven't found yet in it is the free transform.

Not many people on here other than JC, NoleMan and myself use animated gifs unfortunately. I personally think they are hilarious. As for me, I'm a Photoshop guy *insert video frames to layers* and take it from there. I think Noleman uses GIMP if I'm not mistaken so perhaps he can chime in.
Best of luck and welcome to the board

I know I don't post much, but damn

Anyways, the best possible program to use is after effects. But you be in the same boat that you are in now, having to buy something. If you feel like spending money on software, that is the easiest and fastest way to animate something. And once you get the hang of it, it is a very powerful video effects program.

I occasionally try some gifs. Actually use an old, archaic app GIF Animator. Simple. They come out ok.
Agree with Ron about After Effects, but have to have some coin (Ron, btw, is one of the best here

they have after effects trial so I'm gonna try my hand at a few gifs then buy the CC suite probably if I like it.

I'm running after effects and photoshop cs6 now can someone point me to a gif editing URL or something for beginners? I can open a gif in AE but can't see frames, just the video itself.
edit: i found out how to get the gif into a composition on my own

I use photoshop elements 8 and I've done a *few* gifs but the program is very limiting. I can't do many frames and usually have to reduce the images due to size restrictions in the program.
I downloaded and looked at gimp but haven't tried to make gifs with it.
Let us know how it works out for you.
