Picture of my grandfather. Can anyone clean it up or is it too far gone?

Thanks in advance.

Really bad shape there. Tried a little last night, but didn't like outcome. May try again after work. Best of luck. Never had a grandpa. Hope it works out for you.

Thanks for the effort. I appreciate it. The one in best condition to survive Katrina.

ETA: Sorry to here you had no grandpa. I was 3 when he passed so I only have a few pictures & some stories.

ETA2: My amateur attempt

Any chance you can scan the image at a higher resolution?

Heck. That's an incredible "amateur" effort.

Is there a film or residue overlaying the actual photo?

Photo is damaged and any attempt at peeling will result in destruction of photo.

No worries. It looks like perhaps something spilled on it and maybe left a residue. But if the picture is just damaged then rescan at a higher resolution if possible as the previous poster suggested.

I worked off what you had started (which was quite good) but the original pic that you posted was pretty far gone. It could still use more work, but I did what I could with it for now.

What did you do?
I took what Pain did and lightened the immediate background to try and provide some contrast. I also tried to add a little definition to the face.

You cut the left shoulder a tad.

I'll try to rescan at a higher res tonight when I get off, but you guys' work far exceeded expectations.

Fark board doing work.
Greatly appreciated.

I used the cloning tool like there was no tomorrow.

Nice follow-up work.

Scanned at 1200dpi, but file is too large to upload on imageshack. Any suggestions on how to reduce file size without reducing resolution?

Try loading it at imgur. com. I believe their limit is 20MB.
