1. Ian Happ, Cubs OF-INF
His combination of power and speed gives him a chance for superstardom. He only needs to find playing time in a crowded Cubs positional picture.
2. David Peralta, Diamondbacks OF
He always seems like the forgotten man in the Diamondbacks outfield, but he’s healthy and ready to thrive.
3. Jameson Taillon, Pirates SP
The pitcher picked between Bryce Harper and Manny Machado could be remembered for what he does. Supreme talent and a rare remaining reason to watch the Pirates.
4. Aaron Nola, Phillies SP
He was happily bumped to No. 2 in the Phillies rotation with the late signing of Jake Arrieta, but he showed what kind of success he’s capable of last year.
5. Alex Bregman, Astros, 3B
This is an easy one. He could play shortstop for 10 teams but will be a star at third for the Astros, who have superstar Carlos Correa for short. He gave a glimpse of his hitting potential in the second half last year.
6. Gleyber Torres, Yankees
He had a disappointing spring. But he’s going to be around for a very long time.
7. Alex Reyes, Cardinals, SP
Along with his friend Carlos Martinez, St. Louis has potential co-aces here. Martinez is close to reaching his potential, while the hope here is that the Cardinals don’t waste Reyes in the bullpen upon his return.
8. Michael Kopech, White Sox
He’s been clocked at 100 but has matured to the point where he doesn’t have one eye on the radar gun anymore.
9. Scott Kingery, Phillies INF-OF
He was the best player in the Phillies camp, and took a team-friendly deal to stay.
10. Lewis Brinson, Marlins OF
Terrific kid replaces Christian Yelich, the star he was traded for, for his hometown team. It’ll be a long year in Miami, but he provides some hope for the future.
11. Amed Rosario, Mets SS
The Mets get killed for the farm system, but this guy looks like a star.
12. Ronald Acuña, Braves OF
He’ll start in the minors but looks more than ready to star upon his emergence in the bigs. It shouldn’t be too long before we see him. Potential superstar.
13. Patrick Corbin, Diamondbacks, SP
They think they discovered something late, leading to his nice finish. In walk year.
14. Orlando Arcia, Brewers, SS
One of the most overlooked great young players, he carries superstar potential.
15. Scott Schebler, Reds OF
He hit a quiet 30 homers last year, and judging by his spring, appears ready to improve upon that.
16. Andrew Benintendi, Red Sox OF
The ball-playing savant should benefit from the addition of J.D. Martinez to the lineup.
17. Willson Contreras. Cubs C
This is an easy one. Can’t miss.
18 Yuli Gurriel, Astros 1B
He has five games to serve even after he returns from the hamate injury. Hand injuries are tricky, but if he’s healthy, watch out.
19. Nomar Mazara, Rangers OF
He had the quietest 100-RBI season in recent memory. Ready to break out.
20. Fernando Tatis, Jr., Padres INF
He won’t start the year with the Padres. But once he’s up, you’ll know about it.
