Available for free on Audible with Amazon Prime.

Go to Dramatic History Audiobooks Channel.

It is astounding. The story of Franz Stigler and his rise in the Luftwaffe, catalyzed by his act of mercy and chilvary when, on December 20, 1943, he saw a B-17 bomber so badly damaged it was a miracle it was still flying. Instead of shooting it down, he caught eyes with the pilot and escorted the bomber across the heavy German flack lines and out to the sea whereupon, scared stupid, the Americans turned their one working gun on Franz to tell him to go away. Franz waggled his wings, saluted the pilot, and left them alone to make it back to England.

That's not really a spoiler. It is part of the synopsis. The rest of it is a near biography of Franz which is in itself a wonder. The man was born to fly and was a fighter ace.

If you have any interest in aviation, WW2, or stories of inspiration, this is gold. Really, really enjoyed it.

Incredible story and wonderful book.
I can't believe that no one has turned this into a movie.

Movie rights were purchased and announced, but no movement since 2013.

Stigler was shot down an amazing 17 times, and lived to tell about it.

One of the best books I've ever read of any genre.

Agree. Having read a little about Stigler in an aviation magazine years ago, it was interesting to get a fuller picture of the man.

I told my dad about it and he said he'd get it for me for Xmas. About a week later he said he'd checked out the first couple pages and was so hooked that he read the whole thing in like a week lol.
