Thailand recommendations

Thinking of taking a family trip to Thailand in Aug next year. Is Bangkok worth going to at all (have a 17 and 20 year old) or stick to Phuket areas? Australia also an option but since it's winter time probably dropping that from the list.

Bangkok is a must for a few days. Stop there on the way to Phuket for 2 or 3 days. So much to see and eat. There is a lot more to the city than the sex tourism.

I liked Chang Mai and Erawan National Park. For a beach area I would seek out something a bit more excluded.
