I kind of regret doing this but I know there are some people out there who probably want to play the eventual Metal Gear Solid V but won't pick it up because there is no way they are going to play through all of the previous games. For those people, and those people only (don't spoil the story if you are going to play them) here is a great, as quick as possible, synopsis of the entire story up to this point.
Metal Gear Solid - The Complete Story
For those who have played the series but want an in depth analysis of the plots, themes, and even some criticisms of the games, watch these, they're great:
Metal Gear Solid Review & Analysis
Metal Gear Solid 2 Review & Analysis
Metal Gear Solid 3 Review & Analysis
Metal Gear Solid 4 Review & Analysis
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Review & Analysis

One final point about the way Kojima portrays women in his game. Look no further than Meryl: Notice how her muscle structure is portrayed.
I noticed this as well. When she is in that wedding dress at the end her arms are very well defined and muscular, but realistically so. I was good friends with girl in college who played basketball for Tulane. She worked out and lifted weights all the time and her arms looked very similar.
