Rockne died
Frank Leahy quit to be an NFL GM
Ara Parseghian quit (or was pushed out because he was approaching Rock he's wins) and went into broadcasting
Lou Holtz was pushed out despite having a lifetime contract as he was approaching Rockne's wins
Kelly leaves as he was approaching Rock he's win total (ND doesn't his vacated wins.)
There's been a long-standing theory that ND won't allow any coach to surpass Rockne. Its not surprising ND didn't put up any fight to keep Kelly.
