Vinings, Cumberland, and Sandy Springs are nice and relatively close to the city. Rent/property there is less expensive than ITP.
I live in Buckhead and while I enjoy it, it is on a steep downward slope. Crime here has gotten OOC thanks to Keisha. I'd avoid for the time being, unless you really want an affordable spot closer to the amenities.
Avoid anything south of I-20.
