We also spent a first on a 4th DE
We had to do something in case Davenport got injured again or if he just sucks in 2021. Davenport has to earn the 5th year option. He's not guaranteed a spot next year.
If Davenport signs with another team in 2022 & Payton Turner wasn't drafted...we would just have Granderson (pass rusher) & Tanoh Kpassagnon.
Cam Jordan is also getting older. This pick was all about protecting yourself in the future. This defense needs 2 good DE's that can stop the run & rush the passer. Your 2 DE's, 2 outside CB's, & Free Safety are the 5 most important positions on Allen's defensive scheme imo. A fast LB that can stop the run & cover is probably the 6th most important.

second on a project LB
I don't think he's really a project. Everything I've read says that he's catching on fast & looks good. Baun is the definition of a project, but we waited until the 3rd to take him. 3rd round is the earliest you should be taking chances on projects imo. 3rd round is great value for Baun...even though he didn't fit our scheme at all.
Honestly I liked all the picks besides Ian Book. That was CSP's guy though, & he knows more about QB's than I ever will. I would've taken a WR in the late 4th personally.
If Book ends up being a legit #2 QB for us...then it was easily worth the pick imo.

Everyone hates the Ian Book pick but if he turns into Chase Daniel and is a reliable backup for this team for several years nobody will be bitching anymore. If anything he impressed me with his arm strength which I feared wasn’t close to good enough to play but a couple throws he made proved he’s got plenty of arm. Not going to ever be Bret Favre or anything but he’s a smart, mobile and scrappy guy that Sean can mold in a couple seasons into something very useful.
