I've only ever piloted aircraft as a civilian but have been lucky enough to meet and get to know several owners of old warbirds from attending various flight shows when I was younger. Favorite to fly at my age now is a simple Cessna 152. Yeah, it's like the Toyota Corolla of aircraft, but it's fun and relaxing for just tooling around locally.
Most exciting time behind the stick has been in the P-40N. Definitely the most powerful I've ever logged hours in (only collected 42 hours in it due to availability and fuel expense).
Tail draggers are "lots of fun" on the ground, and the torque on that take off roll would force you to kick right rudder HARD and nearly stand on it until airborne. Wish I'd been good enough to try out some aerobatics in it, but alas, nearly all the time collected was straight and level and a bunch of touch-and-goes.
Has anyone here logged any hours in a P-51? I'd love to hear how that one handles.
To all you who flew as military pilots, thanks for your service.
