I used to work with a woman who had a heart attack at a young age and was in a coma. She didn't have a living will or advanced directive and the hospital put a lot of pressure on her parents to pull the plug and donate her organs. They were very religious and didn't want to do it but the docs gave them the "Jesus has her in a headlock and he ain't lettin' go" speech.

Then she woke up and made a full recovery. Oops.

That made me re-think things a bit. Of course I got most of that information from her and she was always a bit crazy, so who knows.

There are the stories I read about more often than I want to where a person is in a coma, and there was a heated debate between the family and the hospital around whether or not to pull the plug.

Sometimes the family loses sometimes the family wins. I don’t know what legal elements sit in the middle of all of that if there is not a living will, or even if there is one.

Surely there’s got to be some point where a living will simply can’t keep you alive if you are occupying a bed at a hospital for six months with machines and tubes galore all around you.
