My dad, three years ago now. Providence came to me when a former girlfriend from high school reached out to me. She'd heard my dad was ill. She owned a hospice care center. I arranged to meet her at my parents house. She arranged everything and my dad, six months later, passed away with me by his side at 2:00am after flying in from Los Angeles to DFW, renting a car and driving to Shreveport. He had all the care he needed and died in his home.
Alzheimer's is a bitch. The first time he asked me who I was, that was the worst sinking feeling of my life.
*Of note: my dad would say some comical things, though. In his last year, I was on the phone telling him about smoking a pork butt and how good it turned out. When I was done, he said, "That sounds like it was a sweet, tasty piece of arse." He had never talked like that before.
