They did that this season. Sluggers are still trying to hit a HR every AB so as a result home runs are down compared to 2018 and 2019 and strikeouts are up.

I think it will take time for the hitters to adjust to the deadened balls. The more alarming part is that these deadened balls may incentivize pitchers to have even less control. Miss over the plate? No worries. As long as the hitter isn't perfectly timed its more than likely gonna stay in the ballpark.

This current season is on pace to obliterate the HBP record
