A ton of movies these days have >$100 million budgets. (That’s more than twice the average movie budget for 1995 adjusted for inflation.) With that much money put into projects, studios do two things

1) rehash established IP that is guaranteed to sell
2) push out creative talent and hire studio yes men to be the equivalent of TV show runners to direct creative output - Kevin Fiege at Marvel, Alex Kurtzmen with Star Trek, etc.


...if studios felt the crunch and felt that they had to lower production budgets, they may feel more comfortable hiring more interesting storytellers to craft more original content.
