MaxArthur was a disaster in WWII. He was totally unprepared in the Philippines.
My former neighbor, now deceased, was a Marine combat veteran who fought in the Solomons and was wounded at Guadalcanal. He hated MacArthur. Called him "Dugout Doug". He never forgave MacArthur for evacuating Corregidor and abandoning the troops. Another Manila combat veteran that I worked with told me that when his unit attacked in Manila, the U.S. forces were told to avoid and not damage a big fancy hotel there in Manila that MacArthur owned. He said the Marine and Navy air corps then shot and bombed it to pieces. Apparently, they didn't like him, either.

MacArthur didn't like the Navy in general and Marines in particular. He made sure the Marine units under his command got as little recognotion as possible.
MacArthur had a habit of freezing like a deer in the headlights under pressure. He did in the Phillipines and again in Korea when the Chinese attacked. OTOH he was not a coward. He intended to stay and die in the Phillipines until ordered out. He fully expected to be brought home and courtmartialed. Instead. Roosevelt gave him a Medal of Honor.
