I've got an uncle that definitely had associations. He used to run illegal poker games and a sports book in Lafayette. Every year for Thanksgiving he'd be talking in code while working the phones.

I forget exact details, but in the 80's there was some sort of scam uncovered at one of the hospitals in Opelousas. It was being run by three associated guys, but suspected to be tied to someone higher up. In the weeks following, all three guys died under bizarre circumstances. My uncle was close friends with one of those guys.
