That is super rare for a cat or opossum to fight with each other.

I have several opossums that visit every single night with multiple outside cats and they all get along.. they even share food together. One is even a female cat that hates all other cats, but the opossums don't bother her.

How sure are y'all it was an actual opossum that attacked the cat? Did your gf actually witness the attack? I am not questioning your intelligence, so please don't be offended. I am just wondering if the actual attack was witnessed? I do believe it's possible if the cat went after it.

I have had opossums, racoons, armadillos, and cats all visit at night at the exact same time and eat together. None of them got into any fighting.

I saw the tail end of it happening after I heard the cat screaming bloody murder. She's sweet to humans but very territorial and defensive of the house and backyard. She will aggressively go after anything, even the neighbor's cats, that enters the backyard. So I'm willing to bet she went after the opossum and the rascal got a good bite or two in.
