don't understand why straight pull bolt guns haven't taken off

when the first straight-pull bolt guns were introduced to the US and Canada before WWI, they were good performers and accurate infantry rifles...until they went to the trenches. They failed miserably in that environment and the poorly, rapidly mfr'ed ammo at the time failed to cycle or was inaccurate. They were quickly replaced by the .303 Enfield and M1903 Springfield (30-06). After the war, straight-pull bolts had a bad rep on this side of the pond and there were plenty of surplus Springfields sporterized for hunting (along with winchester, browning, and remingtons).

Browning currently offers a straight-pull on the Euro market (the Maral) and 99% of Euro competition shooting is done with straight pull small caliber rifles.
