Pro athletes in general have never been as lazy, selfish, and all around soft as they are today.
I don't even think the problem is with athletes specifically. It's probably just a reflection of what's happened in society over the past 50 years.
So many of them really don't seem to care if they win or lose, because they get paid all the same. They don't care about their teammates or coaches, in fact they usually can't stand them.
I mean look at all the college athletes who opt out of their bowl games and stuff now. That phenomenon alone tells you everything you need to know about their commitment to their teams and teammates. Players in the past could have chose to sit out the games, but they didn't and they would have been torn apart by fans and the media if they tried to. Now it's just *shrug*
There are definitely still ones that actually work their arse off and are fierce competitors, like Kobe Bryant was known for being for example.
Maybe we idealize the past too much, but I don't think anybody can deny that in general pro athletes of the past were definitely far more gritty and selfless. I miss when pro sports weren't glamorous.

Its worse than that. Fans and the Media actively encourage players to give up on their teammates and coaches in pursuit of self.
"You've proven enough, don't get hurt. Go make millions. The Rose Bowl means nothing."
I'm not going to run a dude down for sitting out a bowl, because I understand, but I will never celebrate that shite.

That would be interesting to delve into, great riches wasn't always associated with being a pro athlete, you had to win and be great to earn additional egregious amounts of money outside of the game.
Now most athletes are going to be relatively comfortable regardless of what happens, just as long as they manage to stay in the game. So with lessened financial impact is there less desire to go that extra mile?
