Since I lived in Kenya for a while my definition would be driving on deeply rutted dirt roads that are covered with fist sized rocks, and large boulders, often forced to make a new trail around exceptionally bad sections, crossing dry river beds, with 40 degree banks going in and out, always in 4WD, never breaking 20mph, and doing this 15 hours a day for 4-5 days, all just to visit a friend, then you do the same thing to get back home. No cell service, rarely meet another vehicle, gives the term reliability a whole new meaning. I drove places that people with any money at all would only fly to. Not being able to afford a Land Crusier I did it in a Isuzu Trooper.

That old nineties model Trooper was a great vehicle. I wish they were still around.
