All other things equal like rifle weight there is about a 25% recoil reduction with the 6.5. It’s definitely a better choice for a kid. Especially when you consider most hunting rifles are on the lighter weight side. It will help him develop better as a shooter.

The 308 shoots like a rainbow and is only good for squirrels and maybe rabbits of smaller size, the 6.5 only drops 2” at 950 yards and can take down Cape buffalo with ease.
