The confederacy and its flags have turned into culture war stand ins for white guys from the red states. They can't attack *you* yet so they're settling for flags and statues.
The modern liberal seems to hate the CSA more than the guys who actually fought against it. I feel like so much of what's going on today is the punishment/revenge that a lot of the white southerners supposedly escaped from immediately after the war being inflicted on southern whites today.

Reconstruction was nothing BUT punishment/revenge upon white southerners. This is now Reconstruction, Part II (aka "Re-education").
