There was actually a ton of hope when Nagin was elected. He had a ton of the white vote because he was a businessman and not a politician. He was doing great things for the city and Katrina broke him mentally and emotionally. He was holed up in his hotel room and they had to break down the door to pull him out because he was having a nervous breakdown.

Nagin had a lot of promise early in his term.

I'll never understand how seemingly competent, serious and honest people turn into bribe seeking crooks the minute they are elected to public office.

Which doesn't include Landrieu and Morial who both had to leave town when their time in office was done.
