So I too think it sounds measly and ridiculous.
But what else is crazy is that $500 will cost the state $40m. The $1000 he promised would have cost $80m. That a ton of money. Maybe not in the grand scheme of things but good lord.
Also, local districts should better prioritize how they spend their own money from local property taxes to better pay their teachers. It shouldn’t be the state’s responsibility to bump them up to acceptable levels.
