To answer your question with another question: How do you really know you love someone until you REALLY get to know them - get to know what they're like in the morning, when they're in a bad mood, when they're sick, when they're stressed, etc.?
People are on their best behavior and most presentable when on dates. They're hair is done up really nice, wearing their best outfit, got their best jokes ready. That's not a true representation of who they are. If you don't do some harder research, you're making a misinformed decision. Maybe it works out, but you really learn a lot about someone when you live in close quarters with them. Personality differences can clash that wouldn't otherwise be apparent until the stresses of every day life drag them out.
