I think the biggest reasons people either start golf and quit or just don't get involved at all is it's a hard sport to get good at. You can put all the time, lessons, etc... in to it and if you just don't have "it", you just don't have "it". I think that's a hard reality for some.

I sweep the dew on Saturdays and I'm done and back home around lunch which leaves the rest of the day to do whatever with my wife and kids. I think some people use time as an excuse, golf has always taken 4-4.5 hours for most courses. I get that some can't devote that and if that's the case, fine. Nothing wrong with playing only 9 holes too if it's a game you love.
