Best performance I ever saw came very early in his career, the TV version of Iceman Cometh (1960)
He's pretty mediocre as Sundance. Imagine what Garner or Coburn (both were offered the role) could have done with the part.
ETA: Same with Warren Beatty

If you ever get to see Redford as a stylized Grim Reaper in a Twilight Zone episode where this old gal is locked in her basement apartment and he shows up to coax her out ..... I think it was Twilight Zone, may have been Alfred Hitchcock. Gave me the heebie newbies when I was a kid.

Found it. Episode 81 of The Twilight Zone "Nothing in the Dark."

It was a brilliant episode actually, one of my all time favs in that series. Has stuck with me for life.
