I agree on the Manhattan Project scale effort on fusion..I think its the ultimate answer to our power generation needs.
I believe the fuel cell technology we have is much preferable to messing with the hybrids and electric cars. We have natural gas in abundance to produce hydrogen and we need to figure out ways to separate it from seawater efficiently and economically. It works and vehicles run well on it. No massive batteries or extra power generation plants.
