Willis used Hamer Standards straight into the amp (Marshall 800). Clark (with the recording contract could finally afford real Gibson Les Pauls, not Ibanez ) used a Morley volume booster and a Cry Baby.
That's it - medium gain, minimal effects (none for Willis) and there is nowhere to hide. You have to play it to get it.
(ETA: and Willis was about 5'4", 115 pounds, so the Hamer Standard was bigger than he was )
