The AL was batting 5-10 points better than the NL until recently. LINK


The difference has decreased in recent years, presumably because starting pitchers are being taken out of games earlier.

The last time the NL had the higher average was 1972- the year before the AL adopted the DH.

10 points amounts to fewer than one extra hit in a 10-game period.

I think it was unnecessary to begin with.
