Not really. I mean yeah, the top tier physicists/astronomers probably do alright, but it’s not like they’re multi-millionaires.
They’re some of the smartest people on earth, they could probably do a lot better working in an industry, but most of them just really enjoy their research.

They're not after money. They're just part of a massive smug circle jerk where they hand each other awards for their "research" and get off on it. It's worth more than money to them and it's incredibly strange.
ETA: Kind of like the dude in the movie The Mule.
