I started it a month ago and I’m close to finishing. Here are a few tips I’d give.
- I would recommend making a new save for each chapter in case you want to go back. Chapters 2-4 have the best camps.
- Don’t plow through the story. Do stranger missions as you come across them and take time to grind out the satchels from the cook. You will get one that allows you to carry 99 of everything and it makes looting much less of a hassle.
- Explore. If something looks interesting there is probably a reason why. The world is beautiful and I’ve wasted hours just wandering.
- If you are overwhelmed at first don’t put it down. I was a bit overwhelmed at how much I had to do to stay alive, keep my horse in top riding condition, etc. you will pick it up quick.
- Catch and break the white Arabian horse ASAP. It’s one of the best horses in the game and is available as soon as the world opens up.
- Don’t trade in jewelry/valuables to the camp donation box. Just donate enough to upgrade camp. You will need the stuff for later.
- if you have a high bounty and a lot of cash then spend your cash first. The more cash you have on hand if you die or surrender the more the game takes away from you. Also, if you have a $500 bounty just antagonize a cop and surrender if you are broke. Your bounty will go away fully no matter how little cash you have.
- be sure to clean your guns
That’s what I’ve got off of the top of my head.
